How are modified plastics made?

Modified plastics are made by mixing base resins (such as PP, PE, ABS, or PA) with various additives to improve performance.

Here’s a simple step-by-step overview:

  1. Base Material Selection
Choose the polymer according to end-use — for example, PP for automotive, or ABS for electronics.

  2. Additive Blending
Mix in reinforcing agents such as glass fiber, talc, or calcium carbonate, plus stabilizers and colorants.

  3. Compounding & Extrusion
The mixture is melted and processed through a twin-screw extruder, ensuring even dispersion of all materials.

  4. Pelletizing
The modified plastic is cooled and cut into small pellets ready for injection molding or extrusion.

This process allows manufacturers to customize plastics for specific needs — such as improving impact strength, reducing shrinkage, or adding flame resistance.
